When it comes to permanent cosmetics, the treatment breaks the skin in order to get the pigment (the colour) in there to give you beautiful brows, eyes or lips. However, if you’re not careful, you can catch an infection. If you go to a reputable permanent makeup artist, it’s highly unlikely you’ll come up against any infections from being in their clinic. Make sure your artist is wearing gloves and a facemask – though of course all good artists will do this!
Infections with permanent makeup usually happen once you’ve left the clinic. We can’t stress enough how important it is to follow the aftercare instructions from the artist. Here are our top tips:
If you think you think your treatment is infected, avoid touching it and irritating it further firstly. Give your permanent makeup artist a call and describe the symptoms. Send photographs and as much information as you can, so they can advise you in the best way possible.
If you’re really worried about the infection, seek medical advice. It’s best to look after yourself and treat the infection as early on as possible. The longer you leave it, the worse it can get! Many clients are often scared to seek help as they have scratched the treatment leading to infection. Remember – we’re all human, your artist won’t tell you off!
Sometimes with permanent makeup, you don’t achieve the results you want. It’s always important to research before a treatment – if you get an under qualified artist this could lead to undesirable results, and remember this is your face after all. Bear in mind, that the results of permanent makeup on the day, are unlikely to be the healed results. Most pigments will fade by at least 50% after treatment. So if you feel your brows or lips are too bright, just wait for the treatment to heal! If you’re worried no pigment is showing, remember it’s a two part procedure. When you return to the salon or clinic for your re-touch appointment (4-12 weeks after the initial appointment), the treatment will be reinforced and you’ll see the full, healed result after, once you’ve completed the two appointments.
It may be possible to rectify your treatment if you let the artist know as SOON as possible. If you’re not happy with the artist’s work, you do have the option to seek help and advice from a different artist, f you don’t feel comfortabel or confident returning to the artist who initally performed your treatment. Make sure you don’t leave the treatment for too long! A good artist may be able to work with you on your re-touch appointment to make sure you achieve the results you actually want.
After your first treatment, you will have to wait at least four weeks until anything can be done. Even if you think the pigment has disappeared, IT will still be there. Remember, you’re seeing it through layers of skin. Be sure to communicate clearly with your artist and speak up if you’re not happy!
If you really dislike your treatment, a highly skilled artist (like Karen Betts and Our Elite Artists) may be able to use a specialist product ‘ColourLift’ to lift the pigment from the skin. However, if you really want to get rid of the treatment completely, you may need to consider looking at a laser procedure. In some cases, this is your best option. Remember, it is important to do your research and make sure you go to a qualified artist, as going with the cheaper option could cost you more time and money in the long run.
Artists like Karen and her Elite team go through extensive training on correctional work and are higly skilled in fixing undesireable results. When it comes to corrective work (such as changing the colour, shape and so on) it’s best to seek assistance from an artist that has been trained to an extremely high level. Artists of a lower level may be excellent at treatments, but might not be skilled and confident enough to tackle a correction job.
When it comes to permanent makeup, the majority of clients walk away happy with their dream look. But, if anything does go wrong don’t be afraid to ask for help.
