It’s extremely likely that eyeliner was the first makeup item to be invented and we are eternally grateful. The Ancient Egyptians first used kohl liner back in 10,000 BC, little did they know that it would be just as important today.
The Egyptians used it to ward off evil spirits and protect their eyes from the harmful rays of the sun. It wasn’t until the 1920’s when Tutankhamun’s tomb was discovered that eyeliner came to the western world where it continues to be worn to make the eye area more appealing.
During the 1920’s, the kohl eyeliner was made of some very harmful ingredients such as lead, copper and antimony. Thankfully, safer eyeliners were later developed to create this staple makeup bag item which are now kind enough for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers.
We all know how hard it is to get the flicks of our eyeliner even. What starts out as a subtle flick can quickly escalate into an Amy Winehouse inspired look after too many attempted corrections. With a permanent eyeliner treatment, you can have the perfect winged eyeliner everyday with no effort! This is becoming increasingly popular and has been adopted by a huge array of celebs and bloggers too.
Eyeliner can be used to change the appearance of your eyes. Lining the whole eye with dark eyeliner will make your eyes look smaller and just outlining the outer edge will make your eyes appear bigger. Line the water line with a nude or white coloured pencil and this will open the eyes even more. It’s a top models best kept secret!
To make your eye colour really stand out, we recommend you use a subtle pop of colour on the lower lash line to compliment a darker colour on the top lash line. An olive green is great for hazel eyes, blue and grey look amazing on blue eyes, sea-green is ideal for green eyes and purple is perfect for brown eyes. This duel coloured look can be achieved using traditional cosmetics but permanent makeup is perfect for beautifully defined eyes 24/7.
In the 1900’s a group of Russian Ballet dancers would pirouette and leap around the stage sporting very dramatic eyeliner which in turn inspired the likes of Helena Rubenstein and Elizabeth Arden to create eye make up for everyone.
During the second World War, liner was used to fake a seam down the back of the leg to mimic the look of stockings when there was a shortage in materials. We’re sure that took some skills to get the line perfectly straight! We’ll stick to pre-printed stockings and our trusted liner thanks.
Do you know that we all have one eye that’s slightly smaller or more hooded than the other? It’s perfectly normal as our faces are not symmetrical. So, next time you’re struggling to get your eyeliner perfect with disappointing results, don’t beat yourself about it. You can always leave it to the professionals and opt for a permanent eyeliner treatment as a classy and easy alternative.
Men also used to wear heavy graphic eyeliner to create an almond shape to the eyes. Nowadays you’re more likely to see some subtle guy liner along the lash line to naturally enhance the eyes.
How many of these facts and tips were you already familiar with? With plenty of looks out there to create, from a lash enhancement to a striking latino flick, take a look at our portfolio of eyeliner treatments for further inspiration.
